Yamaha RX-A2070 vs RX-A2060 Review

One of the differences between the RX-A2070 and RX-A2060 is due to the 3D sound field playback technology used in the two Yamaha receivers. The RX-A2060 is equipped with the Cinema DSP 3D which relies on three-dimensional acoustical data for enhancing the spatial sound field. The RX-A2070, on the other hand, uses the more advanced Cinema DSP HD3. Owing to the fact that Cinema DSP HD3 supports rear presence speaker output, the RX-A2070 is able to take advantage of the acoustic reflection data that is included in the sound filed data to a greater extent in comparison to the RX-A2060. As a result, the RX-A2070 has one extra sound program called Enhanced that produces a distinct stereoscopic sound field (as permitted by your room acoustics), and is suitable for movies. The RX-A2070 has a total of 24 DSP programs whereas there are 23 DSP sound programs on the RX-A2060.

The RX-A2070 and RX-A2060 have 9 fully discrete power amps. The rated output power is the same for both receivers: 140 W per channel (2 channel driven into 8 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, with 0.06% THD). The RX-A2070 and RX-A2060 have 7.2 channel pre-outs and 4 jacks for Zone out. The Zone 2 and 3 jacks cannot be used for connecting an external power amp for front or rear presence channels, though. The RX-A2070 and RX-A2060 are able to drive a Dolby Atmos speaker setup up to 7.1.2 or 5.1.4 channels but lack a 7.1.4 expandability option via an external amplifier since they cannot process 11 channels simultaneously. That being said, there are 11 speaker terminals on both the RX-A2070 and RX-A2060, and you can use the Intelligent Amp Assign functionality for an automatic assignment of amplifier channels to speakers based on the chosen speaker layout. This way you can avoid switching speaker cables but only up to 9 speakers can be powered on at the same time. Further, up to 2 subwoofers (with built-in amplifier) can be connected to the RX-A2070 and RX-A2060.

The RX-A2070 and RX-A2060 utilize YPAO (Yamaha Parametric room Acoustic Optimizer) technology with reflected sound control. Besides performing a single measurement (at one listening position) using the supplied YPAO microphone, you can choose the Multi position menu option if you'd like to have the speaker settings optimized for up to 8 different listening positions, or the area they encompass to be exact. Furthermore, there is an option for angle/height measurement. Having the height (of presence speakers), in addition to the angle of speakers measured is especially useful if you plan on using the Cinema DSP programs since a more effective sound field can be created when the speakers are optimized for your listening environment. It needs to be said, though, that the RX-A2070 has a slight advantage over the RX-A2060 due to the fact that EQ calculations are being performed with 64-bit precision on the RX-A2070.

There are a total of 8 HDMI inputs (1 front and 7 back) as well as 2 HDMI outputs on both the RX-A2070 and RX-A2060. However, there is a difference in the number of some of the legacy video connections such as composite and component. The RX-A2070 has 4 composite and 2 component video inputs (and no legacy video outputs). On the other hand, the RX-A2060 has 5 (1 front and 4 back) composite and 3 component video inputs. Additionally, there are 1 component and 1 composite video outputs on the RX-A2060. The number of analog audio inputs is the same for both receivers: each of them has a total of 9 (1 front and 8 back). There is no difference between the RX-A2070 and RX-A2060 in terms of digital audio inputs either since there are 3 optical and 3 coaxial on each of the two receivers.

Both the RX-A2070 and RX-A2060 are equipped with MusicCast which is a wireless multi-room audio system that allows you to connect either of the two receivers to another MusicCast devices such as wireless speakers or sound bars using your home Wi-Fi network. You'll also need the MusicCast controller app, which is available for iOS (on the App Store) and Android (on the Play Store) devices. Selection of source content to played back is done from the app, and you can choose from various internet streaming services in addition to your local storage such as a media server.
